Acer K11 LED Projector review for Corporate Users & Lecturers

The adoption of pico projector (also known as pocket projector, handheld projector or mobile projector) is gaining momentum in the industry and 2011 is most probably the tipping point where we will see the adoption of the pico projectors in the main market. Two key factors that played a major role are
  1. the lumens (brightness) of the projector; and
  2. price.
Increasingly, in both lecture rooms and corporate conference rooms, I found that an additional projector to be handy in many situations, and with the availablity of an interesting Q&A web-based tool called Pigeonhole, the need for a 2nd projector for my lectures became a necessity.

As it turns out, there are many pico projectors to choose from, and I spent many weeks going through numerous product reviews both fellow reviewers and also Youtube videos. The 4 pico projectors which I have narrowed down to include:
  • 1. AAXA M2
  • 2. Acer K11
  • 3. BenQ JoyBee
  • 4. Optoma PK301
Among the 4, in terms of brightness (lumens), Acer K11 being capable of 200 lumens stands out. After going through numerous Acer K11 videos in Youtube, my sense is that this may be the one. While there are many Youtube videos on Acer K11 covering it's features and how the K11 performs when movies are played, I did not chance upon any videos that (1) test it's capabilities under powerpoint-like presentation mode, nor (2) one that has a direct comparsion with a traditional 2000+ lumens projector within the same environment (ie. lighting conditions). There are a couple of videos that stated the dimensions of the projected screen, the largest one is 93" projection.

I took a calculated risk and ordered an Acer K11 unit from Amazon on 2 June 2011 at a price of USD359.99 - interestingly, a few days later after my purchase, Amazon adjusted the price to USD329.99 :-| The projector arrived on the 16 June 2011 and I have done several tests on the unit, comparing it with the traditional projectors (those above 2000 lumens) in classrooms of varying sizes (from 12 to 55 students) to a boardroom.

Tests and comparsion that I have done covered these information for Acer K11 and a traditional projector (of different brands and lumens):
  • Environment
  • Max no. of people (in the room)
  • Lumens
  • Actual Brightness (relative)
  • Screen Dimension
  • Prj Away from Screen
  • Smallest font (points) visible
  • Display Resolution (Max)
  • Price (USD, Amazon)
  • Ratings (Amazon)
  • Website (Amazon)
  • Video Review (Youtube)

In conclusion, for just USD329, a 200 lumens capable Acer K11 mobile projector is the best in terms of price-capabilities in its class and as of June 2011, there isn't any other mobile projector that is better (in terms of price-capabilities) than K11.

Feel free to let us know if you know of any that beats K11 in terms of price-capabilities, specifically a USD329 (Amazon price) projector that is capable of 200 lumens projection.

If you also owned this projector and used it in a corporate or classroom environment, would be great if you could share your experiences with us (both +ve and -ve). If you are thinking of whether to buy this projector, also feel free to ask any question.

Overall, am happy with my Acer K11 LED Projector.

  1. Did you try it in a classroom with lights on?

  2. Yes, I've tried that.

For 81" projection, within the "[2A] Acer K11...", the video starts with a pitch dark room, and at 4:20 is where the lights in the middle and back is on. Check it out.

However, for 100" and above, lights in the backrow is not good.

  3. Thank you so much for your immediate response. As a teacher, I am looking for something which will not break my bank, but I also need something which I will not regret purchasing in six months. Is it possible for me to pick your brain about other projectors, which are all in the same price range? I am trying to make this decision today or tomorrow.

  4. Sure. Are you from SG also?

What are the projectors that you've reviewed so far?

  5. Infocus and Viewsonic seem to be the closest in value. I am the anonymous one from before, but I am LKS.

    Viewsonic JD5123 SVGA
    Infocus IN102

They are in the same price range, and I like the fact that each has the blackboard feature, which took ACER out of the running (although they lack USB ports.) The Acer also lacked speakers (X111).

Thanks for your help. Teaching can be expensive.

  6. 1. In terms of brightness, your 2 choices are way better.

    2. What is a blackboard feature?

    3. Acer's speaker at 1W is for Mickey mouse to hear, not for humans.

    4. In terms of lamp life, Acer K11 is way better.

    5. I was told that if we are carrying around the projector a lot, traditional projectors (those above 2000 lumens, possibly including your 2) may break the projector - am not sure is it because of the lamp or what, but you may need to do more checking first.

Infocus IN102 looks very interesting to me. Too bad that I didn't have a chance to check that out before buying Acer K11 as it could be better - not sure.

    6. Have you visited shops that sell these 2 models yet? Best is always when you get to see real demos.

  7. Blackboard means they adjust color when projected on to a wall which is not white. They also have closed captioning which is nice. Does either one look better to you? I would have liked the K11, but I show most presentations that are not movies with more light. I was wondering how important the iris feature is. I am in one classroom, so moving it a lot will not be much of an issue.

  8. 1. I can't tell which one is better. Only way to be certain is to do a visit in the shops to see live projection in action.

    2. What's iris feature?

    3. Same here, I show ppt presentation most of the time also which is why the tests I've conducted are more towards RGB rather than movies or animations.

    ReplyDelete
  9. RGB? Iris is a focus feature. I keep looking these up to help me make up my mind. It may boil down to warranty as Amazon has them both.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Focus feature is important unless the projector has an auto-focus mode.

As for the warranty, it depends on where you are. If you are from the US, then the warranty make sense. If you are from SG, it's troublesome.

  11. After viewing them, which one do you think you woould buy if you were in my shoes?

  12. LKS,

I did a search in Youtube for
    (a) Viewsonic PJD5123
    (b) Infocus IN102
and the lack of videos from users showing either movie, animation or RGB tests seems to suggest that at this moment, either the projectors are too new or is not worth buying.

Do visit the shops with actual units and ask for demo.

  13. Perhaps you will be among the first users to post the videos... btw, are you from SG?

One other point to note is that if you are ordering any of the projectors from the units, need to check whether you can get a replacement power adaptor in SG. For Acer K11, it's using the same power adaptor as Acer notebooks, ie. easily available in SG.

  14. Thank you so much for all of your comments.

  15. Great review thank you. I'm also interested in purchasing a projector to make delivery of my lectures easier. It seems from your videos that the projector has to be placed on a desk quite far back from the screen/wall in order to project a large image that would be visible from the back of the classroom. How far back would it have to be to project an image of say 1.5 m on the diagonal?

About 2.6m away from the screen.

  17. Hi, pretty old post though, but can you tell me what would be the highest screen size in pitch black room? I just ordered one and will be seeing only at night.
Also are you still using it? Has led output lowered or still running fine?
    Thanks..

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hi Anon,

    1. "highest screen size", so far it looks ok at 105", though it is not the sharpest. I reckon that 60" is optimal for pitch black room.

    2. wonder where did you order your unit from? the price in Amazon seems to have gone up.

    3. LED output seems to be still the same. Everything else is still functioning well.

  19. Thanks for the prompt reply,
I got it from Amazon itself a while ago at 329.99 usd. Was a bit worried about max screen size as it has a low resolution chip. But all seems fine till about 80" and im happy with it as i sit way back so that i dont see any screen door effect. I saw some reviews on amazon saying about the failure of DMD chip inside it (white dots), now it worries me, lets see how long it goes.
But overall very satisfied with it :)
Just a small question, do you have any experiences regarding pj screens? Im looking for a diy screen material which gives enough gain for a low lumens projector like this one. Probably 2+ gain material. Any idea?
    Thanks a ton..

  20. K130 acer suitable for classroom?

  21. The Acer K11 LED projector gives a surprisingly good image for such a small projector. It outperforms most of its competition in terms of video quality. Users can simply carry the Acer K11 portable projector along with the USB drive or SD card to display whatever they want to share anywhere without a lapyop PC or a video player. The Acer K11 portable projector enables high-quality enjoyment pf portable entertainment by projecting videos/audio and photos from an iPod/iPhone using an appropriate Apple-certified A/V adapter.
